a universal registry. >> and obama care wasn't a tax until they needed it to be a tax, was it? >> it was the supreme court that said that. >> let's get to our panel now. mark glaze is the director of mayors against illegal guns which is responsible for that super bowl ad. and michael eric dyson is a professor at georgetown university and an msnbc political analyst. thank you both for joining us. mark, it's almost two months since that horrific shooting at sandy hook elementary school. and it seems as though we started the conversation by considering every gun safety initiative from assault weapons bans to restricting gun capacity -- the capacity of gun magazines, yet now the nra says even background checks are worthless, so is that it? is that the end of the discussion? >> well, i don't think the nra marks the end of the discussion. i think it marks the beginning of the discussion. you know, you have this unusual period of time where the public is really focused on this, including the president, 850 mayors and police officers which you saw today in minneapolis, and there is ma

you're a huge fan of barack obama and you do think he's ethical and wise or whatever the words that jay carney used. obama is not going to be president forever. we're going to have new administrations, and obama has kind of solidified what bush and cheney put into place and that's going to be in the hands of other administrations in the future, and david is right. there are no checks on this. if this is so ethical, it's so wise, and it's so legal, then why don't you be honest and open about it and tell congress what you're doing so at least they can do it even if you're going to keep the people in the dark. >> thank you, gentlemen. >>> coming up, at least some members of congress are looking for bipartisan solutions on gun safety. yes, they are. stay with us. , and they occupied the political center which is exactly what president obama is doing right now while the nra occupies the extreme political fringe opposing common sense things that 9 out of 10 americans support. >> julian, let me follow up on that. i agree with you. at the same time at the same point we're going to need a cadre of republican votes to get these things done. the more they fracture, yes, we can stand back and kind of let it happen. at the same time, we've got to make sure we're able to get the republican votes that we need to make sure we actually deliver on the promise. >> and i think that's exactly right, karen. and i think what you do to my earlier point is you begin to identify those 30 to 40 republicans that you think you can get, and you build out these coalitions in their districts. that can be done in a number of places as we have seen from some of the polling data, a number of republican districts. on guns you do exactly what you did, what mothers against drunk driving did in the 1980s when they flipped president reagan on drunk driving laws. this is old-fashioned reta

way imprudently. president obama would have exercised better judgment and he has exercised better judgment. the way it stands now, the drone program is exclusively within the domain of the executive. their protocol, their judge. so, yeah, i feel a whole lot better about the program when the decider, so to speak, is president obama. it's not to say that, again, the process shouldn't be codified, that there shouldn't be oversight, but really is our standard so low that we would only grant power to the executive that we would trust in the hands of a man who led us into a nation we never should have been involved in. what would george w. bush do? that's your standard? we had never allow a power to the presidency that we wouldn't feel comfortable giving to george w. bush? i think we can raise the bar a bit from that. let's keep in mind that the president does have the unilateral power to drop nuclear bombs and destroy the entire planet. do you feel the same about george w. bush having the nuclear codes as you do about president obama. call me a hypocrite, but i sure don't. all right. t

resistance to obama anywhere. >> at some point washington has to deal with its spending problem. >> and when your dad says something, you listen. and when you don't, it usually bites you in the [ bleep ] later on. >> i've had enough of it. it's time to act. ♪ >>> the clock is now ticking on what many economists say is a near-certain double dip recession if more than a trillion dollars in automatic spending and defense cuts are allowed to occur at the beginning of next month. and while the president is busy running the government, today nominating a new candidate for the interior department. and yesterday pleading for action to prevent the so-called sequester, republicans have been out front telling anyone who will listen that they, too, are absolutely opposed to any cuts to military and discretionary spending. >> i don't like the sequester. i think it's taking a meat ax to our government. a meat ax to many programs, and it will weaken our national defense. >> however, just to be clear, speaker boehner says that he will not allow any new revenues to prevent the ax from falling. and he's not

to share with you and then i will direct some questions your way. you have said that president obama believes that done carefully, deliberately, and responsibly we can be more transparent and still ensure our nation's security. i absolutely agree. the american people have the right to know what their government does on their behalf consistent with our national security, the presunks mption o transparency should be the rule. when we on the committee push hard for access to the legal analysis justifying the authority of the executive branch to lethally target americans using drones, for instance, it erodes the government's credibility to the american people. i want to tell you i'm grateful to the president for allowing members of this committee to briefly view some of the legal opinions on targeting american citizens. this is an important first step, but i want to tell you i think there's much more to be done in that regard, and you have heard that from my colleagues here today. i have long believed that our government also has an obligation to the american people to face its mistakes

, president obama, tactics have shifted. tactics on the other side have shifted. again, i think to michael's point, part of the reason we should have this kind of outside verification process is because as the needs change, we need to make sure that we're still staying consistent with some core values. >> karen finney and michael o'hanlon, brilliant, thank you both. >>> sta with us. we have much more ahead. >> americans do not support sacrificing real spending cuts for more tax hikes. jive to tell you, if that's an argument they want to have before the court of public opinion, that is an argument i am more than willing to engage in. hi. hi. i'm here to pick up some cacti. it should be under stephens. the verizon share everything plan for small business. get a shareable pool of data... got enough joshua trees? ... on up to 25 devices. so you can spend less time... yea, the golden barrels... managing wireless costs and technology and more time driving your business potential. looks like we're going to need to order more agaves... ah! oh! ow! ... and more bandages. that's powerful. shareable
